Cutting Solid Stock

Tips Index

  • Machine all stock at one time rather than piecemeal fashion.

  • Group together pieces that require similar cuts.

  • Make extra pieces for test cuts and error allowance.

  • Use stop blocks to maximize accuracy and save time.

  • Use jigs to speed up the cutting of identical parts.

  • Cut all parts of similar design using the same saw setup.

  • Use a ripping sled to facilitate the ripping of crooked boards.

  • Rough cut boards slightly oversize (perhaps 1" in length and 1/4" in width).

  • Use a bandsaw to resaw boards (safer and less waste).

  • Sneak up on critical cuts to avoid costly mistakes.

  • Cut tenons slightly short to allow space for glue squeeze-out.

  • Measure twice, cut once !
